Towards the concept of semantic halo
This paper is focused on the “semantic halo of meter” («семантический ореол метра»), one of the most recognizable, popular, and widely used concepts in Russian verse studies. After the publication of Kiril Taranovsky’s article “On the Relationships between Verse Rhythm and Theme” (1963), in which the author addresses the issue by looking at the Russian trochaic pentameter and deals with one particular rhythmic variation of the specific meter, most scholars who have adopted Taranovsky’s perspective have overlooked this emphasis therefore effectively shifting focus from rhythm to meter. Mikhail L. Gasparov pointed out that “five semantic shades” are observed around trochaic pentameter. “These are (in the reverse order of relevance): Night, Landscape, Love, Death (triumphant or defied), and Road”. From this perspective, the author analyzes Osip Mandelshtam’s poem “Skilful Lady of Guilty Glances…” (1934; «Мастерица виноватых взоров…»). This poem has attracted a significant number of monographic studies; however, scholars have never examined the poem’s meter and its connection with the semantic halo of trochaic pentameter
Semiosphere and history: Toward the origins of the semiotic approach to history
This article compares the approaches to the semiotics of history of two central figures of the Tartu-Moscow School of Semiotics – Juri Lotman and Boris Uspenskij. It is argued that Lotman’s approach to the semiotics of history is closely connected with the development of his theory of the semiosphere (despite Lotman’s unfailing interest in history, his theoretical interpretation of the historical process was, in fact, secondary to his reflection on the semiosphere), that is, with the shift in his research from studies of literary-historical cases to typology. Meanwhile, Uspenskij, a linguist who started out as a scholar of structural language typology, moved in the opposite direction, becoming increasingly engaged in the examination of individual historical cases. Lotman’s correspondence with Uspenskij serves as proof that semi-formal communication on scientific issues between the representatives of the Tartu-Moscow School was often what inspired new fundamental ideas and further development of theoretical concepts
Microwave surface impedance anisotropy of YBaCuO single crystals with different oxygen content
The linear microwave response of ultra high-quality YBaCuO single
crystals grown in BaZrO crucibles is measured at 9.4 GHz in rf magnetic
fields parallel and perpendicular to the -plane in the temperature range
5 K. Having found the analytic solution for the magnetic field
distribution on the sample surface we determine both the surface impedance
in the -plane and along c-axis of
the crystals. For the first time the evolution of the and
dependences on the same sample and in a wide range of oxygen content is
obtained. For (optimum oxygen content) the temperature dependence of
the imaginary part of the c-axis conductivity
is found to be strikingly similar to that of
and becomes more convex with lowering.Comment: 2 pages, 2 figures. To be published in Physica C as LT23 Proceeding
The Tartu-Moscow School of Semiotics: A transnational perspective
This paper seeks to situate the Tartu-Moscow School of Semiotics of the 1960– 1980s within the larger European intellectual-historical context from which it sprang, and in which it played a vital role. Analysing the school members’ engagement with their peers throughout Europe, we outline an “entangled history” (histoire croisée) of multi-directional scientific and philosophical influence. In this perspective, we discuss the most productive concepts and methods of Tartu-Moscow semiotics in the fields of general verse theory, intertextual theory and cultural theory

Sobre a preparação e a proibição da edição russa da obra de Jan Mukařovský, organizada por Iuri Lótman e Oliég Maliévitch
In the late 1960s, Yuri Lotman, a founder of the Tartu-Moscow Scool of Semiotics, prepared, in coperation with his colleagues, a two-volume edition of selected writings of Jan Mukařovský, a founder of Czech literary structuralism and semiotic aesthetics. Although Mukařovský claimed allegiance to Marxism as early as the 1950s and was considered politically acceptable in the USSR, both his structuralist past and Lotman’s structuralist backround were too alien and suspicious for the ruling orthodox Marxists and Soviet censorship authorities, especially after the 1968 “Prague Spring”. The Russian edition of Mukařovský saw the light of day only after the collapse of the Soviet Union (and Lotman’s death). The article offers a detailed reconstruction of the history of the initial, unrealized edition based on numerous archival documents.
DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT METHOD OF IMPACTED TEETH ON THE UPPER JAW
Research objective: To increase the efficacy of diagnosis and comprehensive treatment of patients with impacted incisors and canines on the maxilla; to develop and propose a new technique for determining the topography of impacted teeth (incisors and canines) on the maxilla, using the highly informative data of cone-beam computed tomography; to apply a new method of diagnosis in the planning of comprehensive orthodontic treatment of patients with impacted teeth; to introduce this method into the clinical practice of orthodontist. Materials and methods. In the process of the research to obtain a three-dimensional image the X-ray device PlanmecaProMax 3D Mid with «Planmeca Romexis» – the software for saving, viewing and changing images were appied. For composing and conducting measurements on the image we used Dolphin Imaging (3D Surgery and Ceph Tracing) (USA) program. In determination of the levels of impacted teeth location and angles of their longitudinal axes inclination in three mutually perpendicular planes according to the proposed technique we applied a computed tomogram of patient. Findings. Using the data of cone-beam computed tomography, the orthodontist developed and introduced into practice a method for determining the spatial location of frontally impacted teeth in the upper jaw. This method allows to determine the level of location and the degree of its inclination, which is very important when planning complex orthodontic and surgical treatment of patients with impacted teeth
Analysis of the Behavior of Banks and Companies in the Conditions of Exchange Volatility in Russia
In this paper we study the mechanisms and estimate the influence of exchange rate volatility on key performance indicators of financial and non-financial companies. Exchange rate volatility, being both a consequence and an indicator of uncertainty, accompanied by risks to macroeconomic stability and increased volatility of other macroeconomic indicators, has a significant impact on the performance of Russian banks and companies
